Precise claim:
Technology has more negative effects on young people’s social and writing skills then positive effects.
Reason 1:
Young people don’t gain social skills over technological devices.
Warrant:
You gain social skills by interacting with people in person.
Reason 2:
Using technology decreases usage of proper skills of the English Language.
Warrant:
Its easier to shorten words like “what to wat” or use acronyms like “be right back to brb”, when using technological devices like instant messaging and texting. They get use to writing like that and they use that same writing in the classrooms.
Reason 3:
Technology is a distraction.
Warrant:
Being on social network sites or texting is much more fun to do then to do homework. Technology is a distraction to what children should be doing.

RJA #10a: Thesis Statement
Research Question:
What are the positive and negative effects of technology on young people’s social and writing skills?
Precise claim:
Technology has more negative effects on young people’s social and writing skills then positive effects.
Reasons:
~Young people don’t gain social skills over the technological devices like internet, mobile phone etc. You gain social skills by interacting with people in person.
~Its very common for young people to instant message each other and not use proper English and they get use to writing like that and they do that in the classroom.
Complete thesis statement:
Technology has more negative effects on adolescents social and writing skills because adolescents can’t obtain social skills by interacting over the internet and when they do interact with others over the internet by using instant messaging they do not always use proper English in their writing.

RJA #9: Evaluation of Sources
Books
Title:
Teens, Technology, and Literacy
This is a valid source. The author covers some of the main technology things that teens do these days like blogging, twittering, social networks and she examines how these thing affect the teens writing skills. I will definitely be able to use this in my research paper.
Braun, Linda. Teens, Technology, and Literacy. Westport, CT: Libraries Unlimited, 2007.
Title:
Communication Technology and Social Change: Theory and Implications
This source is valid. I will be able to use this book because it talks about how society is changing from the technology we have for like communication purposes.
Atkin, David and Carolyn Lin. Communication Technology and Social Change: Theory and Implications. Mahwah, New Jersey: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc, 2007.
Title:
Handbook of Writing Research
This is a valid source. I will be able to use this in my research. I really like how it talks about how the new technology that our society has effects the teens and children’s writing skills.
MacArthur, Charles, and Steve Graham and Jill Fitzgerald. Handbook of Writing Research. New York, NY: The Guilford Press, 2006.
Periodical Articles
Title:
ECT Interview: Bruce Perry Discusses the Effects of Technology on the Brain
This is a valid source. It is an interview the magazine Early Childhood did with a Doctor named Bruce Perry. I really liked reading the doctor’s point of view on how technology affects the brain and also his view if children at young ages are capable of using technology. I will definitely be able to use this in my research paper.
Early Childhood Today. Interview with Bruce Perry. Early Childhood Today (March, 1999). Print.
Title:
Technology, Children, and the Power of the Heart
This is a valid source. I will be able to use this in my research paper. This article talks about how technology should be placed in children’s hands because they have the willingness to learn new things. Maybe learning technology will advance them.

Title:
Technology and Youth Education
This is a valid source. I will most likely not use this for my research paper because it doesn’t give facts or opinions on whether technology is affecting teens positively or negatively.

Internet Research Project
Name of tool: Blinkx
Link to tool: www.blinkx.com
Description of the tool: You can use Blinkx to search for videos, create personal video playlists, or build a video wall for your blog or myspace page. According to Blinkx they say, “Blinkx is the world’s largest and most advanced video search engine”.
Strengths: One of the things I was impressed by this tool was when you search something and your results page comes up, it automatically does a 10 second preview of each result on the page.
Weaknesses: Personally, I have not found any weaknesses of this tool. I think its very easy to use and very user friendly.
Databases: The two databases are audio videos or regular videos.
Operators: You can use Boolean or Engine Math. On the advanced search page, it automatically puts in and’s, or’s, etc. for you.
Case sensitivity: There is no case sensitivity searching.
Stop words: Blinkx does not ignore stop words. I did a search on “The Music Legacy Group” and got 245 videos and then did another search on “Music Legacy Group” and got over 32,000 videos.
Advanced search function: Blinkx does have an advanced search function. You can narrow your search to one of the content providers in the following categories: News, Viral and Garage, Entertainment, Information, Commercials and Entertainment HD. You can also narrow your search to video only, audio only, all media, direct play videos and full direct play. Blinkx defines direct play videos as “Videos that can be played in their entirety in the blinkx video player”.
Limits: You can do the safe search and that means it filters adult content from the results.
Sorting: You can sort your results by date or by relevance.
Display: Each result displays: title, a brief description of what the video is, date of the video, and provider of the video for example like Hulu or YouTube, and length of video.
Help function: There is no help function. You can go to the “About” tab and then go to “FAQ” and read the questions there and if your question is not there then you can e-mail them at questions@blinkx.com .

RJA #7c: Field Research Plan
I am planning on doing some field research for this project. I am first going to ask the English teachers at the local middle school by my house which is called Englewood Middle School. Here is a list of questions that I would ask them:
1.Do a lot of your students use a computer or technological device for class work or homework in your class?
2.Do you think technology has a positive affect on your students? If yes, why? If no, why? Could you provide specific examples?
3.For the students who use technology, do you notice their writing skills are different from the students who do not use technology? Could you please provide examples if yes?
Those are the main questions that I would want to ask. I will have to brainstorm of some more questions.
The second thing I would want to do for the field research is to interview a person in the IT field. My aunt’s friend is the main IT person for one of the main hospitals in the Denver Metro Area. Some questions that I would ask are:
1.Do you support children using technology? If yes, why? If no, why?
2.Do you think technology has an impact on children? If yes, what type of impact is it?
3.Do you think technology has a positive or negative effect on children? Explain what you think.
4.Do you think technology affects children’s social skills or writing skills and if so why?
Those are the main questions that I would want to ask. I will have to brainstorm of some more questions.

RJA #7a: Internet Research Tools
I use three primary research tools to conduct internet research. The first tool I use it the search engine MSN has to offer. The website is www.msn.com . I use that search engine the best because it doesn’t matter how I word my words in the search field, because most of the times I get the results I want. MSN search engine is also user friendly. You do not need to know the Boolean format or any other format to be able to use the search engine. I have always had good luck with the search engine and I am planning on using it for this research project. Another tool I use is Google. The website is www.google.com . By being in the class, I just learned that Google has a scholarly search. I used that in a past assignment and I really liked it. It gave me a lot more results that MSN does. Google is also user friendly which I love about it. The last research tool I use frequently is Askjeeves search engine. The website is www.askjeeves.com . The thing that I like most about the search engine is when you are searching something, you don’t have to put key words but you can actually ask a question in the search field. It’s very convenient when you have a question to ask but don’t want to use key words from the question. Those are the three primary tools that I use the most when I conduct internet research.
